Green Lantern Harold Lamb was originally a professor of Greek and Latin literature at Cambridge University.

He was inducted into the Corps on September 21, 1962, at which time the Guardians of the Universe explained that they were giving him a ring that could make anything he wanted it to.

On September 22, 1962, it occurred to him to wonder whether this new ring of his could make a Gorgon that would be as deadly to look at as the real thing.

He decided to try the experiment.

That is why you have never heard of Green Lantern Harold Lamb.
