A.N.: I was thinking about all the different uses of rings, and how you might combine several of them in one, and out came this little incident.

“Bishop Miguel Núñez of Albacete,” the papal secretary announced.

Bishop Núñez, who had several well-known grievances with the Vatican, plastered a smile on his face as he knelt before Pope Lucius IV (who was also, as it happened, a reserve Green Lantern) and kissed his ring.

As he did so, something peculiar happened. A green beam emerged from the ring and wrapped itself around Núñez’s head, and he found himself pinned to the Pope’s hand.

He looked up helplessly at the broadly smiling pontiff. Several cardinals chuckled audibly.

“Now, then,” said the Pope, “about this Neo-Jansenist movement in your diocese…”
