Lucida: Erm, yeah...I was listening to jazz...And thought this insanity up. And omg, the main pairing isn't Sessh/kagu!
Chapter 1: Don't Mean a Thing
The streets of Chicago are a messed up place. Boot-legging, crooked cops, and the mafia. There isn't a clean nose in this town. Two rival mafias are growing especially big. The Onigumo family and the Daiyoukai family. They've been at it for years but now things are heating up. The younger brother of the Daiyoukai just became a detective, deciding to go straight. His brother doesn't like that too much and neither does Naraku, leader of the Onigumo family. Such twisted webs these families weave. Kagome Higurashi is an innocent thrown into the mess. Why? Let's go find out why...
--
"Kagome!" A woman with long hair pulled back into a loose ponytail screamed. Kagome turned to see her cousin running to her. The woman was covered and blood and was clutching to something, like her life depended on it.
"Kikyo!" Kagome said, catching the woman before she fell. "What happened?!" Kagome saw that Kikyo had been shot. Kikyo smiled softly and put something round in the girl's hand.
"Take this to Inuyasha Daiyoukai," she said before closing her eyes.
"Kikyo?! Kikyo! Don't die on me!" Kagome exclaimed, clutching the woman.
"Over here!" A gruff male voice said. Kagome looked up, seeing shadows coming closer. She rose and ran, her long green skirt flaring behind her. She ducked behind a building, her breathing heavy. "It's not on her."
"Naraku's not gonna be happy about this," a second voice said.
"Pff, honestly, leave it to men," a female voice said. "Oh well. We'd better get going before the cops come." Kagome then rushed off. Who was Inuyasha Daiyoukai?
--
"Inuyasha Daiyoukai?" A woman with brown hair tied back asked. The woman had on a white button up shirt adn a pink pencil skirt. She was one of Kagome's best friends and the secretary at the police station. "Yeah, I know who he is."
"Really?! Thanks, Sango!" Kagome said as she sat in the woman's office.
"But I wouldn't go to him with whatever you have," Sango warned. "He's part of the Daiyoukai family. Even if he's trying to go straight, he's still rotten."
"But Kikyo trusted him," Kagome pointed out. "He can't be that bad."
"You have a point there," Sango said. "Here, I'll give you the address. It's up to you to go or not." Sango quickly wrote the address down on a peice of paper and handed it to the girl.
"Thank you!" Kagome said, rushing out the door. I don't know what's going on here, but I know that when I get to this Inuyasha, things'll be clear...
--
Kagome stood cautiously outside of the run-down office. She fixed her green shirt and checked her cream sweater for any blemishes. She then put on a determined face, fixed her green cloche hat, and knocked.
"You that nervous about meeting me?" A gruff voice from behind the girl said, causing her to jump and spin around. Kagome was shocked by the man's apperaance before her.
He had long, full silver hair and bright amber eyes. He wore a fedora and a messy white shirt. His trenchcoat was an odd bright red and his pants were black. A cigarette hung loosely from his mouth.
"Um, are you Inuyasha Daiyoukai...?" Kagome asked, clutching her green purse.
"Depends on who's asking," the man scoffed.
"Um, I'm Kagome Higurashi...Kikyo Higurashi's cousin..." This caught the man's attention. He walked towards her and leaned closer to her. Kagome's eyes widened in surprise at the man's actions. He merely opened the door behind her.
"In," he ordered. Kagome nodded and turned, heading into the office.
Papers were lying everywhere and it was very musty. The blinds looked like they were ready to fall off and the room was quite dreary. There wasn't even one picture to be seen. Kagome heard the door shut behind her and watched the man move to his desk, putting the cigarette out in an ashtray. He sat down in his chair, causing it to squeak slightly.
"Explain," he ordered. Kagome was starting to get frustrated with his attitude.
She glared at him and said, "I would appreciate some manners." This caused the man to raise an eyebrow. He leaned across his desk, hand extended.
"Inuyasha Daiyoukai," he said. Kagome shook his hand.
"Pleasure," she said. "I suppose you should remove your hat as well." Inuyasha scowled but doffed the hat, setting it on his desk. "Now, I'll explain. I was out for a stroll after running some errands. Suddenly, my cousin Kikyo comes running up. She had been shot. She handed me a little jewel and told me to bring it to you. I heard people coming so I hid. I caught a name. Naraku."
"Naraku Onigumo has been after the jewel for years," Inuyasha said after a pause. "Do you know what that jewel is worth?" Kagome shook her head. "More than you could imagine. It can get you enough dough to grant any wish you want."
"Then why did my cousin have it?" Kagome inquired.
"It's been in your family for generations," Inuyasha stated. "But it's got a lot of blood in its history, so your family's been trying to keep it quiet. Too many people want it. And now that you got it, you're as good as dead."
"Well, could I just sell it to this Naraku?" Kagome asked, quite nervous now.
"Shit, and give him the opportunity to buy America with it? Do you have any idea what kind of man Narku Onigumo is?" Inuyasha scoffed. Kagome slowly shook her head. Her mother normally sheltered her from the news about gangs and the likes. Inuyasha let out a drawn out sigh and sat back, thinking. "Naraku Onigumo is one of the filthiest guys to walk the streets of this town-probably even the world. He enjoys causing other people pain and anguish and will stop at nothing to be the most powerful bastard ever. You give him that jewel, and you give him the means to take over the world."
"So what should I do?!" Kagome exclaimed, her hands clammy.
"You can either run or you can fight," Inuyasha replied. "Fighting would be best cause if you run, then Naraku will go after anyone you left behind." Inuyasha rose, closing his eyes. "But I have a vendetta against Naraku, so you ain't gonna go into this alone."
"Is it because you were once part of the Daiyoukai gang?" Kagome asked. Inuyasha looked at her, a little surprised.
"No, it's because he killed Kikyo," he told her. Kagome looked at sympathetically, but decided not to push the issue.
"Well, we can't exactly handle a whole mafia with just you and me!" Kagome pointed out. "I don't even know how to hold a gun, much less use it." Inuyasha put his hands in his pockets, thinking. He scoffed.
"We'll talk to Kouga Ookami," Inuyasha stated. "I hate the bastard, but I ain't going to my brother." Kagome figured not to inquire about his brother. She rubbed the back of her neck though, a bit nervous. It seemed she would be stuck running with a rough crowd for who knows how long. Kagome then rose, scratching something down on a peice of paper.
"Well, here's where I live," she informed the detective, handing him the paper. "Y'know, if you need to know..."
"You're new to this kind of stuff, aren't ya?" Inuyasha asked, taking the paper. Kagome slowly nodded. Inuyasha scoffed. "I'll be there to pick you up at eight tomorrow night," Inuyasha told her. "That mangy wolf normally hangs in Miroku's speak-easy around then." Kagome nodded.
"Um, thanks for your help," she said, turning to leave.
"Hey, be careful," Inuyasha said as she left. She turned and looked at him, nodding but had a nervous look on her face.
"I will," she said, closing the door. Inuyasha's golden eyes remained staring at that door.
"She's gonna get killed," he stated to the empty room.
