Chapter 1

Mai opened the door to the SPR office hearing a conversation going on between Naru and an old man, judging from his voice and the way he speaks, he seemed to be around fifty or so and a foreigner.

She shrugged. It wasn’t strange to find the elderly asking for their help, after all the old ones were always the more superstitious bunch. Well, most of their superstitions were true anyway.

“Mai, tea.” She sighed. As usual, his affinity with tea never ceases to amaze her, perhaps one day he would never be able to sleep because of all the caffeine that he consumed while drinking tea. God knows, caffeine isn’t the best for the body.

She entered the room, seeing exactly what she expected. An old man and judging from his clothes, he was from England. He stood up and bowed in greeting to her. She bowed in return as well.

“Hello Miss, I’m James Lander, an attendant at the Rosewood manor, pleased to meet you.” He said in perfect Japanese.

She smiled in return, “Pleased to meet you as well, I’m Taniyama Mai.” She paused in wonder, “You seem to be English but why do you speak Japanese so fluently?” Her curiosity always got the best of her.

“I’m not just the butler,” He said kindly, “I am also the teacher of Lady Rosewood. Due to her family’s business, she’s required to learn multiple languages.”

“I see.”

Mai instantly felt sorry for whoever this Lady Rosewood is. She seems to be holding a lot of responsibilities and seeing as she doesn’t go to a normal high school, she’s never left their home, to be cooped up in a large house was just horrible.

She began to observe the man once more and she noticed he was still standing.

“Oh.” She flushed in embarrassment, “Please, sit down.”

“It’s nice to know that you still have the decency to blush.” A monotonic voice said from the background. She couldn’t help but glare at him in response.

“Thank you.” He said with a kind smile as he proceeded to sit down at the chair in front of Naru’s desk. As he turned to face the president of Shibuya Psychic Research his demeanor had completely changed. It came from calm and kind to serious.

He continued, “Now, As I was saying, Mr…?“

“Shibuya.” Naru informed him.

The old man blinked, as sudden realization dawned on him, “Oh, of course! Mr. Shibuya…” He paused as he smiled as form of apology, “Well, strange things have been happening at the manor and we’re afraid that Lady Rosewood’s safety will be in jeopardy if we leave this matter any further.” He looked nervous about something, “A lot of people have seen heavy objects float in mid-air, the most recent sighting was by a maid who was cleaning the kitchens, a chair flew at her and hit her on the head. She has been in the hospital ever since.”

“I see. What else has been happening?” Naru asked. Mai continued to listen, there was more to the story, she just knew it.

“Well... I’ve experienced something myself but it’s not as extreme as the one I’ve told you.” He said.

“We’ll need all the information we can get.” Mai added in with a smile towards the old man.

When Mr. Lander smiled, she sighed inwardly. She thanked the Gods that Naru hadn’t decided to voice out his own opinions, since it would most likely shake the old man even more.

“Of course.” The old man said in reply, “Well, I heard a strange sound, the sound of a Violin playing. I’m not sure which piece it was but I’m particularly certain that nobody in the household can play one.” He touched his chin while in deep thought.

“I see. That is strange.” Mai said as she thought about each occurrence, “but what about Ms. Rosewood?”

“She has been troubled by the fact that her schedule is getting tighter because of interviews from the media. So, she’s very stressed about this problem.” He smiled.

“Before I forget, we’ve also enlisted the help of another psychic, I think his name would be, “Oliver… Oliver Davis? He would be arriving the day after tomorrow.” He said this as more of a question.

Mai was shocked and if Naru was, he sure didn’t show it.

Another one? How convenient.” She thought bitterly.

Naru had already told them about his other identity after he found out that Mai had been continuously dreaming about him or rather, Gene, his twin. As much as he'd like to keep it a secret, he couldn't do that since Mai had a right to know if she's dreaming about his brother who happens to be dead.

Regarding the last imposter, they had met him during the case at the Prime minister's mansion. She remembered it quite well. It wasn’t a delightful experience and she was sure Naru won’t be too happy about this either.

“So… Will you accept my case?” The man asked Naru.

Silence ensued in the private office of Shibuya Kazuya.

“Yes but you will need to prepare for our arrival.” He paused, “We will need three rooms. One as our base and of course, two for our sleeping arrangements.”

“Of course, but how many visitors would come?” He asked.

“Eight.” He informed him.

“Thank you very much.” He said as he stood up, “Oh my. I nearly forgot.” He said with an embarrassed smile.

He handed Naru an envelope.

“It’s fine. The agency is capable of paying for the plane tickets.” Naru said as he stood from his chair.

“Oh but I insist. Lady Rosewood told me that she would handle all of your financial expenses.” He said as he forced the envelope upon Naru.

Naru accepted the envelope, probably to make the man stop his jabbering and proceeded to show him out the door.

“Well, until then Mr. Shibuya.” He said with a bow, “Ms. Taniyama.” He bowed again before he finally exited.

“Call Yasuhara, tell him we are going to need his help again and also, tell him that he should pack for a long trip, we’re leaving tomorrow.” He told her.

Mai nodded. Long trips weren’t a problem right now, since break had just started. So, both she and Yasuhara could come without any trouble from the school.

--

The next day, they were all at the airport at the early hour of seven in the morning. Mai yawned as she pulled her suitcase with her. She and Yasuhara had arrived at six because they had to commute a fair distance away.

Takigawa had arrived at exactly seven while the rest of them who were already there arrived at six-thirty.

“We should go now or else we might miss the plane.” Yasuhara said as he began to walk.

As they got their plane tickets, they were surprised to see that they were all going to be flying first class.

“Who’s our new client? He seems really well off.” Takigawa said as he looked around the first class section of the plane.

“I agree. I mean treating eight people to plane ride is pretty expensive, much less a first class plane ride.” Yasuhara said, “Which reminds me, where are we staying?” He asked in curiosity.

“We’re going to be staying at Rosewood Manor.” Naru informed them.

“Naru, who are the Rosewoods? They seem pretty important.” She asked.

“Even common folk know the Rosewoods. It surprises me that you haven’t heard of them.” He said in a way that Mai wanted to strangle him but she wanted some answers and choking him will more likely kill him so, it was out of the question.

Yasuhara smiled at her, “It’s only natural for you not to know them. After all, you don’t study very much.”

Mai glared at him, ready to castrate him if he insulted her one more time.

“The Rosewoods are a family of nobles from England. I heard that the former head of the family, Herman Rosewood was a former duke.” Yasuhara paused, “They also own a large shipping company in France.”

“I see.” Mai said in awe.

Takigawa whistled in awe, “No wonder they don’t have a problem in shouldering our expenses.” Then a devious look appeared on his face, “But it doesn’t seem like Naru to me if he accepted this case just because of the money.” He smirked.

“I have no interest in money.” Came the reply from the seventeen year old genius.

“It’s true. He didn’t even want to accept the money offered by Mr. Lander.” Mai nodded, “I guess it’s because another person has shown up claiming to be the famous Dr. Davis.”

“What?” Takigawa said in annoyance, “Another one? I can’t believe this.”

“I agree.” Hara Masako paused, “How shameless, pretending to be someone you don’t even know.” She said in distaste.

“Yeah…” Mai said before she fell asleep.

--

Mai woke up in an unusual place because she was fairly sure she was still in the airplane and not in a medieval designed home.

Where am I?” She voiced out loud.

A boy with black hair appeared out of nowhere.

Is that you… Gene?” She asked as she made her way towards the male.

Yes, it took me a while to contact you because a force has been stopping me since yesterday morning.”” He explained as they walked together through the house.

Where are we?” Reverting to her old question she looked at her surroundings.

Everything looked like it was from the 1960s or from before that time period.

We are in Bradford Manor more recently known as Rosewood Manor.” Gene told her before Mai heard voices from what seemed like a living room.

I’m sorry but I can not accept my engagement to your daughter.” A handsome young man said to an older man, possibly in his late sixties.

Instead of asking why in an angry manner, the older man just smiled. It wasn’t kind nor was calm it was more on deranged, “And may I ask why?” He said in a raspy voice proof of his old age.

I believe that the reasons behind my refusal are none of your concern.” The younger and more handsome man told him before he stood up to leave, “I must leave for I refuse to listen to anymore of your ludicrous ideas.”

Wow. That man is even worse than Naru.” Mai told Gene. She was sure that not even Naru would insult an old man who would like he could have a heart attack any minute.”

Gene smiled at her, “I agree. Noll is quite the gentleman compared to him.” They laughed before they were cut off by the old man.

Wait. Aren’t you even the least bit concerned about your family?” The old man smiled that frightening smile again, “I know that your family is about to declare bankruptcy.”

My family matters hardly have anything to do with you. Now if you’ll excuse me, you are wasting my time.” He said as he began to wear his coat.

Is it because of that woman?” He asked, “I’m sure that she’ll be of no use to you.”

Yes and I suppose that your daughter is of any?”

The handsome young man didn’t budge, making the old man frown.

Her family has no money, I’ve made sure of that already. I know all about your…” The man stopped, most probably thinking of a word that best describes what he was going to say, “…relationship. If that’s what you call it.”

This seemed to have sparked something in the younger man turning his face into a fit of rage.

Who are you...” He said in anger, “to intrude upon my personal life?”

Randall, my dear boy, my daughter is very in love with you. She has money, looks and brains. Many men have asked for her hand in marriage though I wasn’t surprised that she turned all of them down. I have known of her love for you for a very long time now and I’m sure that you love her as well.”

I do not love your daughter nor will I ever, if you think that you can force me into a marriage with her then I believe that your personality isn’t the only thing rotten about you.” The man named Randall said in finality.

Oh you will marry my daughter. I’ll make sure of that.” The old man said before Randall exited the room.

All the furniture disappeared leaving Mai in a black space.

Mai?” A voice echoed throughout the entire place.

Mai!” Another voice, female judging from its pitch.

She ran towards the voice hoping to find a way out of the darkness.

--

When Mai opened her eyes, she saw Ayako and Takigawa looking at her while everyone was already standing and taking their luggage from the luggage compartments.

“I’m sorry about that. I dozed off.” She said as she stood up and stretched.

“It’s just like you to sleep even when the plane is giving us a headache during landing.” Takigawa said as he laughed.

They boarded a rented van with Lin in the driver’s seat.

“Hey Mai!” Takigawa said but Mai didn’t turn around, she was still preoccupied about her dream a while ago.

“Mai!” Takigawa shouted again but this time closer, effectively snapping her out of her reverie.

“Huh? Oh what is it, Bou-san?” She asked now that he had her, maybe not complete, attention.

“I just wanted to ask you if you’ve been brushing up on your English skills now that we’re here.” He asked her.

Mai wasn’t really very… good at English, a well-known fact at SPR. She often misused words. That worst case scenario was if they weren’t careful they might cause an international scandal especially now, since they were visiting the mansion of a famous personality in the business world.

“Yup.” Mai said as she smiled.

The teacher she told them about, the one that took her in, was an English teacher, so learning English at a short time wasn’t a problem for her.

Takigawa laughed.

“Hey John! You’ve been really quiet lately.” Takigawa said as he slapped the smaller boy on the back.

“Please… Please don’t do that.” The blonde boy said as he tried not to throw up, “I’m not really fond of airplanes.” He added, his face still green.

Takigawa smiled at him sheepishly while he apologized.

“You know, I’m really wondering about this Lady Rosewood woman.” Ayako said as she looked at the views outside.

It was truly beautiful, an endless sea of green grasses and colorful flowers.

“Judging from the way she’s treated, I think she’s an old coot.” Takigawa said as he checked his phone for any important messages, "I mean, why would she send out a butler when she could've just went there herself? It's a waste of money, not to mention a hassle for the guy."

Lin looked at the Takigawa through the rear view mirror, "Perhaps it hasn't occured to you that she maybe busy?" He said before looking back at the road again.

“Regardless, I’ve read about her. She’s supposed to be quite an eye-catcher even though she's said to be out of the age bracket.” Yasuhara said with a glint in his eyes and a smile on his lips.

Takigawa gaped at him.

“You don’t mean you’re actually going to try your luck with her?” He asked him in total disbelief.

“Maybe. After all, the power and wealth could be a big factor in why she’s got so many suitors.” Yasuhara said as he thought about whatever information he had heard about the woman.

“I suppose, I mean… You could marry her and then when she dies you get all the money.” Takigawa said as he looked out the car window obviously bored, “You’d be set for life.” He excitedly said with a gleam in his eyes, “And with three competitors out of the way, she’ll be in my hands.”

“Hey… You’re supposed to be a monk.” Ayako said as she punched the back of his head, “And besides, why three? I would think John would be the only one here who isn't allowed to marry and most probably you as well.” She glared.

“Are you kidding me?” He said as he laughed, “You know for a fact that Naru-chan here has the emotional capacity of a small rock while Lin is just… Well… He’s Lin.”

Everyone laughed at the statement. Well, maybe except for Naru and Lin but of course, who would laugh when somebody was actually making fun of you.

--

Lin drove to the notorious Rosewood Manor. It took them two hours, despite being informed that it’s only a thirty-minute drive from the airport. It was because that every time that they asked for directions the person involved would either tell them to just go back to where they come from so as to avoid getting hurt or ignore them completely.

They saw a large Mansion surrounded by different-colored roses, a combination of red and white roses and a few different other colors.

“This must be it.” Mai said as she got out of the van and began to stretch her legs.

“Wow, they really do like roses. Makes sense though... Rosewood, it's only natural to like roses.” Takigawa said as he observed the surroundings while chuckling.

“I think it’s beautiful.” The miko priestess said as she gazed at the red and white roses.

“That’s only natural.” Takigawa said as he touched a red rose.

“Bou-san, I didn’t know you liked flowers.” Mai said in amazement.

“I don’t.” He smirked, “I meant that it’s only natural for Ayako to think that it’s beautiful…” He laughed, “She thinks everything is, including herself.”

“Say that again.” The priestess said as she smacked him straight on the face.

“Oh! Mr. Shibuya!” The Mr. Lander came running towards them.

They were at the gates entering the rotunda of the mansion, so they weren’t very far.

“Hello, Mr. Lander.” Mai greeted, the first one to greet him out of all of them which wasn’t a very big surprise.

“Hello Ms. Taniyama.” He greeted politely.

“Mr. Shibuya… and of course, company.” He said as he bowed to all of them.

“You arrived at a good time. Dr. Davis has just arrived himself.” Mr. Lander told all of them as they proceeded towards the house.

It was extremely large from the outside but looking at inside gave a new definition to the word huge.

They were led towards a reception room by Mr. Lander. The hallways themselves look like they were built for kings.

They arrived in a large oval room and at the sofa sat a young man. He had brown hair and blue eyes. If you know who Dr. Davis really was, he would certainly be not included in you list of look-a-likes. He was obviously not Dr. Davis, save for the eyes. He stood up in respects towards them.

“Good afternoon, Mr. Shibuya.” He said as he looked at each of their faces, “Mr. Lander has informed me of your arrival so don’t be surprised that I know of your names.” He said with a gentle smile.

Well, Naru must’ve eaten something bad on the plane ride because he actually went along with his act, “Good afternoon, Dr. Davis.” He said in his usual stoic manner as he proceed to take a seat at the opposite end of the sofa.

After they had all seated, Mr. Lander bought in some tea.

“Lady Rosewood will arrive in a moment.” He announced to all of them.

There was an uncomfortable silence in the room. Mai didn’t get it but she felt that the room was very stuffy, to a point where she was having a hard time breathing. As minutes passed, Mai was on the verge of hyperventilating but she didn't make it obvious since she didn't like worrying her friends.

After a few more minutes of silence, they heard the some footsteps and by the sound of it, it looked like that the person who owned those footsteps was sneaking about.

The members of SPR immediately went into action, however the said Dr. Davis didn’t move an inch.

“Who do you think that is?” Ayako asked Takigawa as they tried to search for the owner of the footsteps.

“It might be the culprit, but I don’t feel a ghosts presence anywhere.” Masako said as she began to look around the room.

That was too easy. It can’t be the one responsible for all of this.” Mai thought as she hyper-ventilated. It was too stuffy in the room that she couldn’t breathe.

Suddenly a bookshelf moved near a painting. A figure emerged from behind the book shelf but as it entered the room Takigawa immediately slammed it’s body to the ground, effectively preventing it from any movements whatsoever.

“What the hell are you doing you big imbecile!” A voice shouted from below him in English.

Ayako and Mai turned pale while John turned even paler than before. Takigawa, confused by their reactions to his ‘capturing the culprit and saving the day before they were even briefed’ was ruined when he looked down.

He was currently pinning a sixteen year old girl to the ground. This could certainly count for sexual harassment but what made Takigawa pale was when she had raised her right knee effectively hitting his most sensitive part straight on. She kicked him there... and what's worst was she kicked him hard.
