Chapter One
Noir gazed at the moon from a tree branch. His wings tucked to his sides, he silently made a wish despite the clear midnight sky, free of shooting stars.
Please just let hybrids become legal, he thought. Others might wish for a million bucks or something like that, but all Noir wanted was his own freedom. The freedom to walk among crowds without fear of being discovered. The freedom to live without constant paranoia of being killed.
He also wished to know his past. First he'd been taken care of by Sariah, a kind-hearted human who had raised him. And she'd done a pretty dang good job, he might add. Noir smiled to himself in the darkness. But then she'd disappeared. Like everything else in his temporary life. He stretched his wings and let them catch the breeze.
What, he wondered. Is wrong with being a hybrid?
Under different circumstances he would've considered it a gift. He could run like heck and fly as an added bonus. But he'd be willing to give it all up for freedom. And for something else- a friend. He leaped from the tree branch, wings out, and drifted aimlessly to the soft grass below.
Sometimes Noir tried to picture his parents. A hedgehog and a bat, sure, but what did they look like? How did they act? And why had they left him with Sariah?
He wondered what they'd say if they met him. Would they be disappointed? Proud? He didn't even know if they were still alive.
Sariah always told me to follow my heart, he thought. But right now it's leading me to discovery- and discovery means death. He closed his eyes and exhaled heavily. Choices flooded his mind. Which one would get him answers?
He snapped out his wings again. They caught the moonlight and reflected it back at the darkened sky, the same color as him. He ran a few feet and jumped, automatically beating them for a steady ascent. He wished he could fly away from his problems as easily as he could fly from his spot by the tree.
There I go with my wishes again.
He found a wind current and rested his wings, gliding.
Why do I do that? They never come true anyway.
Noir breathed in deeply, enjoying the crisp night air that surrounded him. He longed for someone to enjoy it with him. Someone who would listen to him and give him advice. Someone who would make his life less lonely.
But like the inevitable sunrise, seeming to chase him every morning, he knew there were people out there who wanted him dead.
Who would want me as a friend? he wondered sadly, his thoughts slipping towards depression. He noticed that he was no longer gliding in a straight line, and he beat his wings before he could get close to the ground. With every beat, he imagined himself getting farther and farther away from the problems that plagued him.
He pictured Sariah's face and her striking green eyes, shimmering like they always had. What would she say? Probably to snap out of it and face his fears. To take his fate and rework it.
"Okay," he muttered, tucking his wings to his sides and angling his body to the forest below. "Okay, Sar. So I'll try your method. But if I die it's all your fault." A half-smile spread across his face as he came rapidly closer to the trees.
