The ex-leader of the anti-federation group, “Quark,” sighed tiredly. Here she was. Promising the world (or to more specifically Quark…) that there would be no more, because the Pangalactic Federation… simply did not exist anymore.

She wanted to live the quiet, peaceful, and easy life in the world. It was that simple, yet it was so complex. There was something amiss in all of the hours she spent trying to do… regular things that regular 19-year old girls do.

Maria peered up at the fluorescent ceiling of the Diplo, and closed her eyes. Although, she couldn’t resume taking a rest, as the door suddenly opened. Startled, she quickly sat up from her bed looking active and well.

Cliff’s figure entered the room. “Well, lookie here. And Lieber told me that you were sleeping like a baby about five minutes ago!”

Maria twitched. How the hell did Lieber know she was sleeping? She didn’t want to answer that question for herself. “Yes, I was a bit tired. But I think I’m ready t-“

Cliff just stared at her with a disbelieving look in his eyes. That’s all he needed for her to drop her disguise and slump her shoulders.

“Oh fine! I admit it! I wasn’t expecting an easier life to be so…”

“Boring?”

Maria thought for a few seconds. “Well… I couldn’t call it boring, but the past two days have been nothing but me sitting down here and browsing through the political broadcasts.”

Cliff yawned. “Oh yeah. That’s tons of fun. More old people chattering about how they get to set up the rules.”

Maria rolled her eyes at him.

“It’s very important Cliff. With no Federation, the Vendee and Aliens are currently negotiating ways to-“

“Booorring! I know I go fly around with Lancar to discuss with the old Federation geezers, but that doesn’t mean you should pay attention to Politics. You disbanded Quark, go do… what people… your age… do?”

Cliff was confused. After the events involving Luther, what’re the chances of ANYONE knowing what to with their lives?

I mean, the only one that’ll really stay the same is…

“That’s it! Nel!”

Maria had a bewildered look on her face. “Nel? What about her?”

Cliff looked as if he had the best idea in the world! And this was not a hunch. “It all makes perfect sense! You can go down to Elicoor II and stay there for a bit. I’m sure she wouldn’t mind. After all, you could learn from her.”

“What do you mean by that?”

“Think about it! Constant work makes Nel’s world go around. If anyone knows how to remedy your situation, it’s gotta be her.”

Personally, Maria thought it would be even more boring at Elicoor II. If what Cliff said was true, then Nel would just be off to work every day. And then she’d be left alone at Castle Aquaria… Without a glimpse of technology excluding her pulse blaster.

Cliff seemed to understand. “Yeah yeah, I realize that it might not be as flashy as here on the Diplo, but… Fayt is there.”

Maria froze. Fayt? Now that’s a reason to go to Elicoor. After she had told him of her two “prospects,” he simply smiled, and acknowledged what she had said. She felt like a complete fool after words. Nonetheless, she still wanted to go down to Elicoor.

“All right Cliff. Set course for Elicoor II, if it’s not a problem. And please call me from the Diplo’s intercom when we’re there. I think I’m going to rest quickly before I get there.”

Cliff grinned, and gave her a thumbs-up.

“Will do, Captain!” Cliff quickly forgot about Quark being disbanded, and jogged off. All he had to go was get rid of Steeg and Lieber, and then he’d have the ship and Mirage all to himself. Ingenious!

Maria then laid down on her bed, and turned off the lights. At least she was getting SOMEWHERE.

Fayt Leingod wiped the sweat of his brow, as his body relaxed on a bench in Peterny. Then, his communicator began to ring.

Fayt flipped it open, seeing Cliff’s face in the screen.

“Oh. Hey Cliff! Long time no see! How is everyone doing?”

Cliff grinned. “Absolutely great pal. Except for Maria. I think she’s… bored.”

Fayt paused. Sounded like Maria. Even though she WAS tired of the fighting, I guess some people couldn’t exactly stand still and enjoy life like that.

“And because of that pal, we’re dropping her off at Elicoor II. We thought that maybe she could sit around with you and Nel.”

Fayt narrowed his eyes. “Are you sure this isn’t just a plot to get everyone off so you and Mirage can-“

“Anyways!” Cliff cut him off before Fayt could expose him. “Do you think they’d have room at Castle Aquaria? I’d hate to have her pay a fortune at an Inn.”

Fayt pondered for a moment. Clair, Adray, Tynave, and Farleen had all just arrived from Arias. Most of them had to share rooms. Which only left a single guest room in the palace.

“Actually Cliff, I don’t think that they have any more-“

“Non sense! You two can share a room, right?”

“W-Well yeah. I suppose we could.”

“Then we’re beaming her down in 45 minutes. Have it ready by then, all right? Later!”

Fayt sighed. Cliff had ended the transmission quickly. He didn’t even give him very many choices. Taking a drink from his canister, he started to walk towards Castle Aquaria.

The intercom rang, Cliff’s voice was unusually cheery. “Wake up, Maria. We’re ready to beam you down.”

Maria slowly opened her eyes, and got from up from the bed. She quickly fixed her hair, and gathered her luggage for the trip. Walking along the steel corridors of the Diplo, Maria heard footsteps. Running footsteps.

“C-Captain Maria!!!”

Urk. Lieber. It seems he had followed her to the transporter room.

She was positive that she said it loud enough when she told Fayt about settling down to the quiet life. One, to make herself seem serious about it; Two, to make sure Lieber hears it from stalking around infront of the door.

“Y-You’re really going down to Elicoor? Please, allow me to accompany you on your vacation!”

Maria narrowed her eyes, back facing Lieber so he couldn’t see her face. Damn! Think of an excuse Traydor, think of one!

Suddenly, she heard another set of footsteps coming from the Diplo.

“Get back over here, idiot of a brother.”

Maria exhaled in relief. Thank the creator for Steeg.

Steeg carried Lieber out of the room by the collar, after making sure her bags were ready to be transported with her.

“I’m really sorry about this Maria. I’ll TRY to make sure he doesn’t call you every three hours.”

Maria chuckled, and nodded. As the teleporter started to run, she could feel her body getting lighter and lighter, silvery-blue rays of light circling around her nimble form.

It was a blinding brightness around her for a few seconds, then when her vision quickly came back, she saw the smiling face of Fayt Leingod. Here she was, in the courtyard of Castle Aquaria.

“Hi, Maria.”

Gosh. That wasn't TOO bad, was it? Just finished my run of Star Ocean, for the second time. I really paid attention to the characters too. Got the FaytxMaria ending. (Yes!)
