So here’s yet another oneshot for my readers to (hopefully) enjoy. I can’t say that this will be very long, but as I went over it a couple of times, I thought that itwas worth putting up. Now that I think of it, this is almost but not quite a drabble.

This is basically Link’s take on what he thinks about Zelda. Needless to say, it’s going to be from his point of view. This doesn’t really fall into any specific timeline.(I really need to get with the program and make a Twilight Princess based story, don’t I?), but I’d say that this can be applicable to my current ongoing story, A World of Lies, since this pretty much falls into AWoL’s contexts. So because of that reason, this is written to not reveal any spoilers for anyone who hasn’t read it (for one crazy reason or another, just kidding), or scenes to come (as AWoL progresses, you will see just how much this and that are related). And one more thing, this oneshot foreshadows the events to come in AWoL, so you might want to consider this as you read future chapters.

I do not own The Legend of Zelda.

I’ll Be There

She’s our princess. And because of that, Zelda’s expected by most to stand on a pedestal and be the graceful young woman that the world has made her out to be. But of course, that’s just a mindset that we’ve all been tricked into just because she’s royalty.

I expect as much from people who have never met Zelda in person, and to be honest, I can’t really blame them. We as people are always quick to judge people before they can give their part of the story. I included. I hate to admit that I had some preconceived ideas about her. The second I met her, however, shattered all of that.

She’s beautiful to say the least, which was obviously expected. Glittering violet eyes, silky brown-blonde hair, lightly tanned skin, you know that sort of thing.

What I didn’t expect, however, is that she’d be so… normal. Because she’s royalty, a princess, we as human beings instantly categorize her as the proper young lady who always makes use of the honorifics, walks around with an air of superiority around her, and is horribly modest in every single way possible. She’s a victim of a typecast, like we all are. But in Zelda’s case, preconceived ideas are much, much worse.

When I call her normal, I really mean she’s normal. She’s not inhibited in the least, though she does have her naïve moments. She doesn’t have sheltered views of the world despite the fact she almost never goes out into the open without a bodyguard—a government issue. Her attire—even though it’s her everyday royal outfit—reveals more than you’d think a princess would. Her choice of words isn’t the least bit uppity, as most people would call the vocabulary of an aristocrat… She’s normal. She’s like you and me. I think that’s what makes me feel so comfortable when I’m around her. It’s like I’m talking to person, and that’s exactly what Zelda is—a person. Not some glorified princess who commands the attention of those she’s around. Not some stuck-up snob that most people make the princess out to be… Just a person. When it comes down to it, she’s not a princess. She’s not a member of the upper class. She’s just Zelda.

Zelda is almost always seen with a smile on her face, and I guess it’s due to being a princess. She’s such a prominent figure in society that she has to smile… for the sake of others around her. If she shows a tear, or her lips curl into a frown, people instantly think that something is wrong and they rush to her aid. I don’t think that’s what she wants. She wants to be strong. She wants to show people that she can get by just fine without someone offering a hand. She wants to prove that she can stand on her own two feet. Of course, this is just my take on Zelda. I can’t really understand what she’s thinking. It’s not just because I’m a man, it’s because… she’s Zelda. She’s one of the toughest Rubik’s Cubes out there. Most people think that just because she’s a princess, she’s so easy to figure out. I have a first-hand experience of that assumption being proven false.

I think it goes without saying that Zelda is much more complex than her royal archetype leads us to believe. Because she’s a princess, people think she is free of all the problems we all face, but in reality, she probably has more to deal with than we do. She’s insecure. She refuses to harm others. She doesn’t want to be the one to antagonize people and cause conflict. And she doesn’t. But for some reason, she takes everything on her shoulders and assumes that everything wrong in the world is her fault. I’m sure she has a good reason for this kind of thinking, but it’s such a sad way to look at things. Zelda has gone through enough in her life in the short time I’ve known her. She’s witnessed things that no one should see, and she doesn’t deserve that. Sometimes I wish she would just put down the heavy burden she’s taken and open up… to me… to anyone.

But every time I ask her, “Are you alright, Zelda?”

…She just smiles.

She does it to assure me, and that’s what a smile is supposed to do, right? But in her case, it does it opposite. It makes me worry even more… And she just smiles wider.

I’ve saved her life quite a few times in the past two or three days. And even though I preserved her life, I think I’ve caused more bad than good by damaging her pride. I think she wanted to save herself, rather than having someone come to her rescue… like all the other princesses she’s been put in the same box as. She’s a tough girl, but still feels like she has something to prove, so she just acts tougher. She doesn’t need to do that. She’s proven to me countless times that she can be brave, she can be tough, and that she can be just what she wants others to think she is: a big girl. Through one action she’s shown me that she’s tougher and braver than I could ever hope to be. She saved my life by risking her own, and for that, I’m forever grateful to her.

I guess what I’m trying to say is… Zelda doesn’t need to go the distance just to prove something that’s already been proven. She shouldn’t be ashamed to ask for my help or think that she’s just a burden on my shoulders, because she’s anything but.

She needs to understand that she doesn’t need to fake a smile to hide her true feelings. She needs to understand that she doesn’t need to worry about me worrying about her, because… well, if she does, it’s going to happen anyway. She needs to understand that she needs to swallow her pride and that I’ll be more than happy to help carry the heavy burden she's set upon herself. She needs to understand that if she just calls my name…

I’ll be there.

And that’s that. It gives you more insight on Zelda’s character in AWoL. In fact, out of all the characters set to be introduced, Zelda is the most complex and will be the most developed. Hell, Link—the main character and freakin’ narrator—won’t have as much character development as her.

Speaking of AWoL… I have something planned, and it’s called Cliff’s Notes—A World of Lies. You’ve heard of them, right? Cliff’s Notes, Spark Notes, Cleveland Notes, Wikipedia… A lazy reader’s best friend. Well, I’m making my own, and it’s specifically for AWoL!
