LAST TIME:
Saleria:
She was ready now to start the new program; it would start at eight o’clock tomorrow.
Salazar:
“She is keeping secrets as well, and taking over the school.” Salazar pointed out.
“Caution is always wise Salazar.” Severus replied.
Chapter 8: Third Year C
Saleria:
She woke early the next morning and readied herself. Once she was done she simply sat on her made bed and flipped through her notebook, reading the notes that she had taken yesterday. Salazar stirred and she glanced over then pulled out the last tests for checking. It was 6:00 before Salazar woke up, she had woken up at 4:00, “Good morning Sal,” she greeted tentatively. After all her last attempt at talking hadn’t gone well, and her business Saturday may have been mistaken for coldness.
“Good morning Saleria,” he said softly in return then quickly grabbed his things to take a shower and left. Saleria sat for a few moments wondering if there was something wrong other than leaving for a longer time than they had originally assumed. After all it had taken an extra six months to complete her journeys.
She sat next to Salazar at breakfast, no attempt to make conversation from either of them. In fact Salazar had scooted away from her. She lost her appetite. She stood and left with no explanation to anyone, she owed no one explanations. Except Salazar that is, but they never got far enough into a conversation for her to explain. If she were her Father the conversation would have occurred even if Salazar did not want to have it. She was not though, so no forced conversation would be had.
She stood in one of the darker corners and watched people. Salazar returned shortly and looked at the door to their room warily. Saleria wondered on this. Soon everyone had returned from breakfast and was sitting around to common room. Saleria stepped from the shadows causing everyone to jump.
“I have separated you into groups of four; you will have an assignment that is basic reading. It is based on your skill level. I have another group for math, and a practice sheet for handwriting that you will do in your spare time. The reading and math will consume 45 minutes of our time.” So Saleria read the names of reading groups and passed out the assignment. They reentered the room to find it was arranged differently. After 20 minutes she reorganized the people and passed out math assignments and the handwriting worksheets as well.
Soon the forty-five minutes was complete and she clapped once which got everyone’s attention, “Squibs, and why they exist is our first lesson,” she spent the remainder of class speaking of how squibs were born due to inbreeding and the muggleborns were the natural way to keep the magic strong and make sure no squibs were born. Of course, when talking with purebloods it takes longer to explain these things.
Through Christmas break things formed a pattern. Saleria did not attend any classes; she wasn’t enrolled in any and had no requirement for them, so during classes she left the castle. She did a number of things, she continued to travel about, visited the magical creature registry (not to register, but to speak with the creatures), visited any of the 289 Slytherin estates, but mainly she spoke to the parents of the students she taught on Sunday and taught them the same things. Each day she returned to Hogwarts in time for dinner, which was eaten next to Salazar, who seemed to wish he was far away.
Her Saturdays she would wake at 4 am then take out letters she got from the various people who she had seen from that year and a half. She would read them all (87 letters, all at least a page in length) by 5:30 then put everything away and just sit there. Salazar would wake and she would greet him with “Good morning Sal.” He would nod, then get dressed and leave to spend time with the twins. Each time he left without inviting her she died just a little inside. Still, she would spend her Saturdays responding to all 87 letters.
Sundays she made sure that they did their basic skills lesson, and then preached about many things. The fact that Salazar Slytherin wanted to open a special program for muggleborns that they would enter at age 10 so they could learn the basic culture of the wizarding world, how important it is not to cheat because when the time comes you will know nothing, how important family is and knowing where you come from, most important was her lesson that Dark Magic was not bad.
You see, there are healing spells and such in Dark Magic and killing spells in light, however 2,000 years ago the Light Magic people became paranoid and almost completely wiped out those who had Dark Magic. Those with Dark Magic went into hiding for 300 years then returned and met Light Magic people and procreated with them. Dark Magic is just a different type of Magic all together. Saleria was mostly Dark Magic; everyone has a bit of both and who your parents were wasn’t the only determining factor as to which was most prominent in you.
The thing was though, she still managed to feel depressed, Uncle Sev left any room she entered almost immediately and her brother refused to spend any amount of time with her. For all the good she was accomplishing she still became saddened, because for all that she had 87 pen pals to whom she wrote weekly, she was becoming lonely. Surrounded by people, people she was to teach about behaving well were not friends, and no one to whom she could spend time with, and no one she had the privilege of calling family.
Salazar:
Salazar was sorted into a basic skills group just like everyone else, he had the same abilities as Saleria but still she sorted him into a basic skills group. She had greeted him but seemed to hesitate, as if wondering if she had to, and he had responded as he had to and then left quickly, not wishing to spend too long with his fearsome sister.
Her lecture on squibs was something they had discovered when they were 8 together, but it was interesting to hear her speak on the usefulness of muggleborns. She still hadn’t met his eyes which made him know something was up, he feared what it was. Somehow he wondered what the real reason for her return was.
When Saleria was gone before he woke up and not seen by anyone until dinner Salazar became even more wary. She had been gone for a year and a half and now she is leaving during the weekdays. It continued and every Monday through Friday was spent not on castle grounds.
Every Saturday Saleria said, “Good morning Sal,” and he would nod in return. Not trusting his voice to keep even, it would have proven that he was terrified of her, he had a feeling if she found out he distrusted her it would not end well.
Salazar spent his Saturdays with George (whom he had a crush on) and Fred, laughing at all the pranks they pulled and watching the map. It was interesting to watch and never got old. Saleria he noted just sat in the same place in their room all day.
Sundays were interesting; he did basic skills with ease, and then listened to his sister lecture. She knew things that he didn’t now, and she was an excellent teacher. To Salazar’s fear he felt that if Saleria wished to have minions the entire Slytherin house would throw themselves at her feet.
Sunday evenings he had tea with Uncle Sev, and they spoke of many things. Mostly though Salazar would tell Uncle Sev about the lessons, lessons that his Uncle refused to attend. They also spoke of where Saleria may be going and what she may be doing in their room every Saturday.
